‘Functional’ Cross Training vs. Specific Training: General Means General

“Fitness training for a given sport is not simply a matter of selecting a few popular exercises from a bodybuilding magazine or prescribing heavy squats, power cleans, leg curls, bench press, circuit training, isokinetic leg extensions or ‘cross training’. With all this recent hoopla surrounding ‘functional’ or ‘cross training’, ranging from all the hype over ‘300‘ a few years ago (and the resulting attention that Mark Twight of GymJones fame received) right on up to the, shall we say ‘interesting’, antics of CrossFit, it’s something that’s really stayed off my radar.

A CrossFit Bro-down Message for the New Year

So I’m minding my own business today when I notice I’ve got a new message over on YouTube. I see that it’s from a guy I knew a few years ago.

It’s then that I was hit with my first Bro-down of 2009.

Apparently he’s now a CrossFit fan(atic) and was being nice enough to inform me that I was “uneducated” about CrossFit. This was based on a handful of tongue-in-cheek comments I’d made a few weeks ago regarding this video. Continue »
