Realistic Expectations

Have your mind right, the rest will follow

When people start weight training, they come in with a lot of pre-conceived notions. For the average raw newbie with the common if ill-defined motivation of "looking better", most of these notions can be anticipated.

For men, they want a 6-pack set of abs. Women need to tone up the legs and firm up the butt.

Neither the average man or woman wants to get "too bulky, like the guys/girls in the magazines".

In logic, it's generally considered that if you start with a false premise, you will invariably end up with a false conclusion. If you're in the gym busting ass and watching your diet like a hawk week in, week out, under the wrong idea, you're probably not ending up where you want to be. A false premise has created the expectation of an outcome that doesn't follow from what you're doing.

Female-Specific Training and Diet for Physique Development

Part II - Nutrition and Diet

Download as PDF

Just when you thought you were done, not quite. The training is only one part of the puzzle.

You'll variably hear people talking about diet as being various percentages of your results. I think this is stupid, because diet is both everything and nothing.

If you lift but don't eat properly, you won't do very well. If you diet properly but don't exercise properly, you won't do very well. To discuss either element as independent of the other is frankly dumb. Both have to be done, and done properly, for the best results.

Nutrition, much like training, has a ton of myths surrounding it. Also like training, most of what you'll hear is bullshit.

Nuggets of Vitriol

September 8, 2007

I've been slacking on my Hater Nation updates lately, mainly since I've been on a sub-vacation. With that in mind, I threw together some hate that's been brewing and decided to let it fly as a single Q&A type article. So behold, the new Nuggets of Vitriol feature.

Bro-Science vs. Real Science

The Difference in Science and "Unexplainable" Results

This piece is being written in response to the proposition that "scientific theory" cannot explain certain results, in the context of the human body's function.

In more specific detail, the original proposition was to the effect of:

"If science tells us that the body mobilizes fat in a fashion that is genetically determined, and therefore spot reduction is impossible, then why do some bodybuilders note that when they work the midsection harder that it gets leaner?"

Well ok, the astute among you have likely noted some of the problems here, but I'd like to go into some detail just to eliminate any doubt.

This is a treatment of real science vs. bro-science.

Asimov's "The Relativity of Wrong"

I was recently reminded of an article I read again not too long ago.

It's by Isaac Asimov, whom I have long considered one of my favorite authors of fiction and otherwise. Mr. Asimov died back in 1992, but occasionally one of his gems will resurface and I'm reminded again why I enjoy his work so much.

This article, titled "The Relativity of Wrong", was written with the ideals of science and scientific progress in mind, specifically with the idea of how one "kind" of wrong can be "less" wrong than another. What, you might ask, does this have to do with strength training?

As it turns out, it has plenty to do with it. More specifically, it has plenty to do with the volumes of information (and misinformation) that pervade the industry, and the poor (if any) reasoning ability that comes along with this.

Mr. Asimov's frustration and subsequent rebuttal are in many ways parallel to what goes on in the fitness industry.

It's unfortunate that the mindset that he, and others of his kind, so actively try to discourage is so rampant. It's not just in the fitness industry; you see this all over. When you can't even teach science in schools because of superstitious traditions, you've got a problem.

With the levels of bro-science and general anti-intellectualism at all time highs, I feel the need to occasionally interject things such as this in order to help chip away at some of the ignorant thinking. Enjoy.

This weeks idiot is brought to you by the forums at www.bodybuilding.com

Let's say somebody created a very solid and very innovative approach to training, when compared to what everyone else at the time was doing.

Let's also say that the guy that invented this approach to training drew upon resources which, again at the time, were sparse and largely unheard of in the Western world.

Further let us say that this individual has himself performed quite well in his chosen sport, not to mention having such a passion for it that he devotes a large portion of his life to it, and is even available, for free mind you, to discuss the topic at length with anybody.

Let's take this hypothetical person and put him in a funny situation. I say hypothetical because everybody knows that somebody with that much experience and knowledge would surely charge for every ounce of information and hoard his secrets like a dragons treasure. Everybody knows that's what all Fitness Expert Professionals do.

At any rate, let's take this hypothetical person and pit him against, oh I don't know, some average wannabe guru on the Internet. Maybe a guy that's read a few books, books from the same author that our hypothetical person based his training system on.

This obviously qualifies him to bash our hypothetical person, and talk down to him about how to train people, right? Of course it does!

Maybe I Should Sell Out Too?

You know I've been thinking about it, and evidently the circle-jerk concept of marketing is the wave of the future.

C'mon, it was inevitable, you know it.

With that in mind, I have a new product I'd like everyone to have a look at.

One of the biggest questions you'll hear from people, in regards to strength training, is "what program are you doing?" or "what program should I use?"

I can't help but laugh a little when I hear that. Not because it's a stupid question really, but more because I remember the days back when I was always obsessed with the "perfect program". I think we all start out with that mindset to one degree or another, because it's pushed on us by the fitness industry for one, and really, we just expect that there's some plan out there that if we just follow it, will lead us to success.

Speed Training For Size

I've actually been working on this as a subset of another bigger project, but due to some recent motivation, I've decided to edit it into an article format.

The reason is a simple, if petty one: the use of speed-oriented training both as a modality in itself and as a means of auto-regulation has been prevalent for decades.

However it seems that some have taken it upon themselves to rediscover this approach to training, as if it is the ultimate new revolution in exercise.

Female-Specific Training and Diet for Physique Development

Part I - Myths and Misconceptions in Training

Download as PDF

This is going to be a three-part series on "how to train and diet" with a slant towards women in specific.

Women in general don't need to do anything crazy, stupid, or outlandish in order to get in shape. In terms of stress-response from the body, which is all training and diet are, women respond nearly identically to men.

What this means is that any training or diet regimen that works for men will work for women. But you don't see this advertised. Quite the opposite.
