So, if you managed to sit through this, I give you props. My hosting company is having "problems with the SQL database, which they hope to resolve soon." I don't know about you, but reading sites that load up faster than a 14.4 kbps modem c. 1996 is pretty damn annoying. So they've got a few more days before I pull the plug and go elsewhere. I haven't forgotten my three faithful readers. Also, the first draft of the book is DONE. Working on edits now, and keeping fingers crossed it will be ready to go by the end of April. Stay tuned. |

Are you result-based or idea-based?
One of the core problems facing everyone involved in fitness and strength training is how to figure out what is garbage and what is legitimately effective.
This can be difficult because the entire field of exercise science is still made up of a lot of unknowns. Most of the knowledge and things we take for granted today have come in large part from experts in the field, the coaches and trainers that actually work with various athletes.
Even then, there's a wide disagreement among these practitioners. A lot of it will really boil down to argument over fine details, as the general philosophies will usually line up.
But the devil can often be in the details; how do you know what you should listen to and what you shouldn't?

Functional or Not? What does the word “functional” mean to you? If you've had any sampling of the modern fitness industry, “functional” will probably mean doing exercises that have a high carryover to the motions and actions found in most team sports. It could just as easily mean standing on a wobble board doing one-handed dumbbell presses, in order to improve “core stability”. Have you ever stopped to think what “functional” really means, though?

If You Don't Know What You're Talking About........then please stop talking. Stop giving advice. Most of all, acting like you're suddenly God's gift to exercise form just because you passed a piss-easy certification.

I Am Not Serious Because...Are you serious about getting in shape? Are you serious about training your clients, or coaching your team? Awesome. What about the people that are Not Serious? Apparently, that is what happens when you don't feel the need to shell out $49.99 (for the next 10 minutes!) for every latest Guru scam-tactic. The logic here is that any trainer or coach worth his or her salt would be head over heels about learning new things. This is true.

Happy (Late) New YearsWelcome back folks. Been a little dead around here lately. Hatin' hit a lull around the holidays, but with the new year brings new opportunities to make fun of all the stupid crap people try to pull off. Rest assured, 2008 will be chock-full of good solid hatin' and maybe even a little useful tidbits coming through. Watch this space. |

Nuggets of Vitriol - November 1, 2007 Why I Call Bullshit On Things That WorkFrom time to time (ok, constantly) I catch flak from people for hating on something that has given Person X clear and obvious results. Then Person Y will chime in and say the same. Before you know it, it's a huge e-fight.

Critical Thinking and Evaluating Information |

Critical Thinking and Evaluating Information One of the common things I hear from people deals with the evaluation of information. With so much conflicting data out there, so many self-proclaimed experts, how can you ever be sure what is right and what isn't?
Now, this article is going to get a bit in-depth. If you're new to logical thinking and critical analysis, it might go over your head. But I'll try to be user-friendly.
Much of this deception happens because most people aren't equipped with the right tools to evaluate information in a critical fashion.
Science and its related disciplines are focused on the scientific method, which is a strict means of observing phenomena, gathering data, and interpreting it. Science is based on the idea of fallibility; if an idea cannot be challenged and subject to review, then it is not a scientific theory.
We can evaluate training and nutritional concepts in much the same way. Any statement can be subject to challenge; in fact, this is how it should be. A strong claim will meet the criticism, and thus display that it is valid. A weak claim will either be improved, or shown to be inadequate (ie, bullshit).

Anabolic Steroid Users Are Educated |

Anabolic Steroid Users Are Educated, Older Professionals, Study Says Recently a new study was released regarding the characteristics of anabolic steroid users.
The conclusions, while shocking to some, are hardly surprising. Most users of anabolic steroids are not elite athletes, nor do they meet the image of the desperate addict to recreational narcotics. They're also not the poor children that have been used to justify the USA's ban on anabolic compounds.
No, in fact, the average steroid user is a different and, to many a surprising, animal: approximately 30 years old, well-educated, earning above average income in white-collar jobs. Most reported that they were not involved in any athletic competition, nor did they use the drugs as teenagers.

Anabolic Steroids and Drug Laws |

The War on Stupid

Thursday, 27 September 2007 |
Anabolic Steroids and Drug Prohibition Anabolic steroids are a tricky subject. On the one hand, they're illegal, and most of you have been told your entire lives that these drugs are harmful if not deadly, that they have no value, and only cheaters would use them. Like it or not, you've been lied to. About the drugs and what they do, about who uses them, about realistic effects (desirable or otherwise). You've been lied to by a largely uneducated legislature that has given in to the demands of sport. This has many obvious issues with the foundation of America itself, in the concept of individual liberty so long as it does not infringe on the rights of another.
